AISI H11 Hot-Work Tool Steel

AISI H11 (UNS T20811) — 5 % Cr hot-work tool steel, HRC 48–53, tougher than H13. Compare with H13, H21 for hot shear blades and aluminium die-casting dies.

AISI H11 (UNS T20811) — 5 % Cr hot-work tool steel, HRC 48–53, tougher than H13. Compare with H13, H21 for hot shear blades and aluminium die-casting dies.

AISI H11 (UNS T20811, DIN 1.2343, JIS SKD6) is a 5 % Cr hot-work tool steel with 1.5 % Mo + 0.4 % V. Hardened to HRC 48–53, it is the lower-V cousin of H13 — slightly less hot hardness but tougher. Used for hot shear blades, die-casting dies for aluminium and hot piercing punches.

Standard composition: C 0.33–0.43 %, Cr 4.75–5.50 %, Mo 1.10–1.75 %, V 0.30–0.60 %, Mn 0.20–0.50 %, Si 0.80–1.20 %, balance Fe

Hardness: Annealed HB 192–229; hardened HRC 48–53

Heat treatment: Austenitise 990–1,040 °C, air or oil cool, double temper 540–620 °C

Properties: The lower-V cousin of H13. Slightly less hot hardness than H13 but tougher. Used for hot-work applications where impact dominates over wear.

Applications: Hot shear blades, die-casting dies for aluminium, hot piercing punches, plastic injection moulds for high-temperature polymers.

Cross-reference: ≈ JIS SKD6, DIN 1.2343, GB 4Cr5MoSiV, BS BH11.
