Knife Storage and Handling: A Practical SOP for Industrial Blades
A knife that is dropped on a concrete floor is a knife with a chipped edge you cannot see until the line trips. Storage and handling SOPs cost almost nothing and prevent the most expensive failure modes — micro-chips, rust, geometry drift — before they reach the line.

The four storage rules
- Foam-lined case, edge-up. Slot dividers between knives. No contact between knife edges.
- Dry room. 30–50 % relative humidity. Air-conditioned in humid climates.
- Rust-preventive oil. For storage longer than 30 days, apply a thin film of light mineral oil. Remove before mounting.
- Inventory tracking. Each knife has a tracking sheet with re-grind count, dates, and operator initials.
A knife stored in a humid drawer with other knives develops three problems simultaneously: surface rust, micro-chips from edge contact, and geometry drift from sitting in a deformed position. All three show up in the first cut after the knife is mounted.
The handling rules
- Two hands, both on the body. Never carry a knife by the edge, by the bore, or by a single hand on the OD.
- Dedicated knife cart. A foam-lined cart with handle and locking wheels. Not a forklift. Not a cardboard box.
- Foam or rubber mat on the workbench. When the knife is set down, it sits on the mat, not on a steel table.
- Visual inspection on receipt. Look for chips, cracks, rust, and decarburised surface before mounting.
- No loose knives on the line. A knife in a pocket is a chipped knife. Use the cart, not the pocket.
Common failures
- Knife chips on receipt. A new knife was dropped during shipping. Inspect immediately on receipt, before mounting.
- Rust on a 30-day-old knife. Stored without oil in a humid environment. Apply oil before storage; re-oil every 90 days.
- Micro-chips on the side of the disc. Two knives stored touching. Use slot dividers.
- Geometry drift on a thin slitter. A 1.5 mm slitter stored on a flat surface without support warps under its own weight. Use a curved foam insert.
- Knife “lost” in the tool crib. Inventory tracking is missing. The 5 minutes per shift to log a knife return saves the 1-hour search when a knife is needed urgently.
The inspection checklist on receipt
For every new knife:
- OD, ID, thickness per drawing (± 0.02 mm)
- Hardness 5-point file test (within ± 1 HRC of target)
- Edge hone under 10× loupe (within ± 2 µm of spec)
- Surface finish Ra (within spec)
- Visual: chips, cracks, rust, decarb
- Mill certificate with ladle chemistry (and cobalt content for carbide)
- Signed and dated on the tracking sheet
A knife that fails any of these is rejected, not mounted. The 5 minutes of inspection saves the hours of line troubleshooting if the knife is sub-spec.
Storage room setup
A proper industrial knife storage room has:
- 30–50 % relative humidity control (dehumidifier in humid climates)
- Foam-lined case racks (vertical, with slot dividers)
- A dedicated inspection bench with 10× loupe, surface-roughness tester, hardness files, micrometer, and dial indicator
- A separate workbench for re-grind return and inspection
- A clearly labelled “incoming / in-service / retired” workflow
The setup cost is €5,000–€15,000 for a typical shop. The cost of one chip event (€1,000–€10,000 in scrap and downtime) is recovered inside the first year.
Field case
Case: paper converter, 8 slitting lines. The customer was getting 14 days from a D2 slitter, with 30 % of knives showing micro-chips on receipt from the re-grind shop. The tool crib had a single shared drawer for all knives. We specified foam-lined case racks with slot dividers, a 5-point inspection on receipt, and an inventory log. Micro-chips on receipt dropped to 2 %. Service life went from 14 to 19 days. Annual savings: €22,000.
The SOP
For industrial knife storage and handling:
- Store in foam-lined cases, edge-up, with slot dividers.
- Maintain 30–50 % RH in the storage room.
- Apply rust-preventive oil for storage longer than 30 days.
- Inspect every knife on receipt and on every re-grind return.
- Use a dedicated knife cart, not a forklift.
- Track every knife (re-grind count, dates, operator).
- Retire any knife with chips, decarburisation, or below-spec geometry.
