Definition of CrN (Chromium Nitride) PVD coating for industrial blades: a corrosion-resistant silver-grey coating, the standard for food-contact and wet applications.

undefined Chromium Nitride (CrN) is a PVD ceramic coating, silver-grey, with the best corrosion resistance of the standard PVD coatings. Applied at 400–500 °C, 3–5 µm thick. CrN is chemically inert in most food acids, fuels, and mild chemicals, making it the standard for food-contact cutting and wet-end applications.

When to use

  • Food-contact slitting (food packaging, packaging films)
  • Wet-end converting (battery separator film, paper wet-end)
  • Marine and outdoor cutting applications
  • Copper and brass cutting (no chemical reaction)
  • Anywhere corrosion resistance matters as much as wear

When NOT to use

  • High-temperature cutting above 600 °C (oxidises)
  • Very abrasive substrates without a harder topcoat (TiCN)
  • Where the absolute lowest friction is needed (use DLC)
