Definition of dressing in industrial blade grinding: the process of re-sharpening or re-shaping a grinding wheel to expose fresh abrasive and restore geometry.

undefined is the process of re-sharpening or re-shaping a grinding wheel to expose fresh abrasive grains and restore the wheel’s geometry. A glazed or loaded wheel drags, burns the workpiece, and leaves a poor surface.

When to dress

  • On a regular schedule: every 8–40 hours of grinding (depends on stock removal)
  • On demand: when the wheel starts to drag, the surface gets hot, or the finish degrades
  • After a change in workpiece material
  • When switching from a soft to a hard substrate, or vice versa

Dressing methods

  • Diamond dresser: rotates against the wheel to expose fresh abrasive
  • Aluminium-oxide stick: hand-held, for spot dressing
  • Conventional dressing: 0.01–0.05 mm infeed per pass, 2–4 passes
  • Creep-feed dressing: 0.001 mm infeed, slower but more accurate
