Definition of edge rollover in industrial cutting: deformation of the edge where the substrate pushes the steel over instead of cutting it, common on a too-soft knife or a too-sharp edge.

undefined is the deformation of a cutting edge where the substrate pushes the steel over instead of cutting it cleanly. The rolled edge looks like a wire edge that has folded over, usually visible as a bright lip on the back face of the knife.

Common causes

  • Hardness too low for the substrate (HRC 56 cutting 304 stainless)
  • Edge operating above its tempering temperature (D2 above 450 ยฐC)
  • Impact load on a soft knife
  • Repeated thermal cycling (thermal fatigue plus rollover)

Fixes

  • Increase hardness by 2โ€“4 HRC points
  • Move to a hot-hardness steel (M2 HSS)
  • Add a hot-hardness coating (TiAlN, AlCrN)
  • Add active cooling to drop edge temperature below tempering point
