Definition of land in industrial cutting: the small flat behind the cutting edge that supports the hone, used on shear blades and heavy-duty slitter knives for edge strength.
undefined is a small flat behind the cutting edge, parallel to the cut direction, that provides additional support to the hone. On a plate shear blade, the land is the flat portion of the back face between the chamfer and the start of the clearance angle. On a slitter knife, the land is the portion of the back face within 0.05–0.20 mm of the hone.
Land width
- Plate shear (carbon steel ≤ 6 mm): land width 0.10–0.15 mm
- Plate shear (stainless ≤ 4 mm): land width 0.10–0.20 mm
- Heavy slitter (≥ 5 mm section): land width 0.10–0.20 mm
- Standard slitter (< 5 mm): no separate land, the chamfer merges into the clearance
Trade-off
A wider land adds strength but also adds friction at the cut, which can increase burr and thermal load. Specify a land only on heavy shear blades or thick slitters where edge strength matters more than low drag.
