Definition of runout in industrial blade measurement: the total indicated reading (TIR) of the knife as it rotates on a spindle, and how runout affects cut quality.

undefined is the total indicated reading (TIR) of a circular knife as it rotates on a precision spindle. Runout is the sum of the knife’s out-of-roundness, its concentricity on the spindle, and the spindle’s own error.

Typical runout by application

  • Precision slitter (film, foil): ≤ 0.005 mm TIR
  • Standard slitter (paper, film): ≤ 0.010 mm TIR
  • Tissue slitter: ≤ 0.015 mm TIR
  • Granulator rotor: ≤ 0.025 mm TIR (less critical, impact dominates)
  • Plate shear: not applicable (single pass)

How to measure

  • Mount the knife on a precision spindle
  • Set a dial indicator on the OD or on a reference face
  • Rotate 360°
  • Read the TIR = max - min
