When to use a secondary bevel

  • Thin slitter blades (< 2 mm) on abrasive substrates: secondary bevel of 0.05โ€“0.10 mm at 12ยฐ adds strength
  • Shear blades on hard plate: secondary chamfer of 0.05 mm at 8ยฐ improves chip resistance
  • Granulator rotor knives: secondary chamfer of 0.10โ€“0.20 mm at 10ยฐ provides edge support

Trade-off

A secondary bevel reduces the effective clearance angle at the edge, which can increase drag and burr. Specify the secondary bevel only when the primary bevel alone is chipping, not for routine slitter blades.
