Definition of TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) PVD coating for industrial blades: a harder and more wear-resistant variant of TiN, ideal for abrasive substrates.

undefined Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN) is a PVD ceramic coating, harder and more wear-resistant than TiN, with a blue-grey colour. Applied at 400–500 °C, 2–4 µm thick. The carbon content in the coating structure gives TiCN a higher hardness (2,800 HV vs 2,300 HV) and lower friction than TiN.

When to use

  • Abrasive non-woven slitting
  • Recycled polymer granulator bed knives
  • Glass-filled polymer cutting
  • Coated paper slitting
  • Corrugated slitting

When NOT to use

  • Above 400 °C edge temperature (carbon in the coating oxidises, loses hardness)
  • Stainless or aluminium (DLC is better)
  • High-temperature cutting (TiAlN, AlCrN better)
